AFNS Admission Policy

The Department's minimum admission requirements for the PhD, MSc thesis-based graduate programs is based on the following grade point (or equivalent) achievements:

  • with a BSc GPA > 3.5, admission to the MSc thesis-based or PhD degree program;
  • >with a MSc GPA > 3.3, admission to the PhD degree program;
  • with a BSc GPA > 3.3 to < 3.5, admission to MSc thesis-based degree program;
  • with a BSc completed < 5 years ago and a GPA > 3.0 to < 3.3, student will normally be admitted to the MSc thesis-based program with conditions. Student will be required to complete 3 undergraduate courses (specified by supervisor and supervisory committee) in the first term and obtain a gpa of > 3.3 with no grade less than B in any one course. Undergraduate courses completed are not eligible for course credit towards a subsequent graduate program (as per FGSR Program Manual). Individual study course as one of the conditional courses is not recommended. Supervisor must submit justification for any individual study course and instructor for the individual study course cannot be the supervisor.
  • with a BSc completed > 5 years ago and a GPA > 3.0 to < 3.3, based on life experience student will normally be admitted to the MSc thesis-based program with conditions. Student will be required to complete 3 graduate level courses (specified by supervisor and supervisory committee) in the first term of the qualifying period and obtain a gpa of > 3.3 with no grade less than B in any one course. Graduate courses completed are eligible for course credit towards a subsequent graduate program (as per FGSR Program Manual). Individual study course as one of the conditional courses is not recommended. Supervisor must submit justification for any individual study courses and instructor for the individual study course cannot be the supervisor.
  • with a GPA below 3.0, admission is considered on an individual basis. Strong justification from the supervisor must be submitted with the application to the Graduate Coordinator. Justification should include student's strengths, work experience, other relevant information to assist the Graduate Coordinator in making the final admission decision.

Note: FGSR Admission requirements will apply to MAg/MEng/MSc course-based students.
